descriptionA series of 11 large, unfolded, lithographs, depicting the [better known] vulcanoes of Java, as [e.g.] Gunung Merapi, and other Javanese scenery. Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn (1809-1864) was a German geographer and naturalist and is considered to be the unsurpassed master of scientific research and of the depiction of Java. He joined the Netherlands Indies Army as a medical officer in 1834. In 1845 he became a member of the Natural Sciences Commission. This set of prints is hardly ever coming at the market, the [here missing] text vols. are more or less common. A good, though "mixed" set. some plates from the Dutch, some others from the German edition. Comes with the four textvolumes [with some Ills. ] in a mediocre condition.
