descriptionA nightly moonlit, river scene. A fine yacht is preparing for the day to come, ,some other vessels at the left hand side, having their sails up already, a very calm water,(quite rare for this maker) the full moon almost at the centre of the work. A typical Dutch village at the opposite river bank. Marinus Schouman was born in Dordrecht in 1770, belongs to a famous family of painters, being the father of Isaac and the pupil of Michiel Versteeg and, later, of his uncle Aert Schouman. He actively studied at the drawing academy in The Hague. Mainly producing marine paintings and drawings from life, four of which are conserved in the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum, and two at the Dordrecht Museum.. He was a member of "Pictura" (Dordrecht, still active) He had a large workshop, with many pupils and followers, e.g. Chr.Schotel, Is. Schouman, P.A.Dijkshoorn, Jean de Greef, P.M.Gregoor, Matth.Quispel, etc. He moved to Breda in 1839, where he died in 1848. The calmness of the water is quite rare, as mos of his works have a stormy atmosphere as in the two drawings "Sailing vessels in a storm" at the Kunsthalle Hamburg (Inv. Nr .1963/655, 1963/356) as well as a drawing in the Landesmuseum in Darmstadt (Inv. Nr. 2097)
